Tragedy often reminds us what’s really important in life and just how strong we really are. On Valentines Day, my alma mater, Northern Illinois University (NIU) was devastated by fatal shootings by one former student, who ended his rampage by taking his own life. Thanks to an e-newsletter system headed by my former Northern Star newspaper adviser, alumni received news, updates and first-hand accounts as the newsroom received them.
While I am deeply saddened by now-dwindling coverage, I can’t help but be tremendously grateful to be part of such a strong, connected college and alumni community. Many former Star reporters ran editorials regarding this needless tragedy in their current publications, and I felt I’d be remiss if I didn’t do the same. I was particularly pleased, but not surprised, to hear that the current Northern Star staff reported to work immediately after the news of the shootings hit campus, each handling the content with respect and dignity. They also managed to respond to local, national and global media with grace and maturity. “We didn’t do the right thing, we didn’t do the wrong thing, we just did something,” Editor in Chief John Puterbaugh said. This was the sentiment of many, whether it was a student making remembrance ribbons for her classmates or a church holding a vigil.
During a tragedy, people just do. While I continue to come to grips with the atrocities of the day, I can say it has put a lot in perspective personally, and reemphasized my bond to my school. “A single act of violence does not define us,” NIU President John Peters said. True, but it will forever change us. If you would like to give to The February 14 Student Scholarship Fund, please visit the memorial site or call 877-448-2648. –Erica Burke |
