It’s that time of year again when Technomic releases its annual foodservice trend predictions. The year ahead is expected to bring about continued competitiveness among restaurants as they fight to attract consumers who continue to get more sophisticated and as technology advances.

Terra Tech is building a network of local farmers who grow living herbs and leafy greens for local grocery stores across the country, and plans to change the seed to cannabis where and when possible. CEO Derek Peterson saw the potential of the marijuana industry more than five years ago and after making a personal choice to leave his decade-long career in investment banking, he founded the Irvine, Calif.-based company that focuses on local farming and medical cannabis.

Coffee is one of the first things that come to mind when thinking of Seattle, but what about Portland? If not, it should be for at least the next two years as Coffee Fest moves into town in October. “For the freshest, most energized and rewarding experience, make plans to come to what has arguably become America’s most vibrant coffee market,” the event page says of Portland.

The United States Department of Agriculture reports that the percentage of food insecurity among American households barely decreased from a high of 14.9 percent in 2012 to 14.3 percent in 2013. In 2013, 17.5 million households were food insecure (14.3 percent) and 6.8 million households (5.6 percent) had very low food security, which was also essentially unchanged from the 5.7 percent in 2011 and 2012, according to the USDA report.
